Reviewing "The Red Deaths" book 1 in the Keys of Candor Series by Seth Ervin and Casey Eanes
Hello and happy Monday! Yes, I know that is an oxymoron.
After 24 hours of mentally digesting Chap. 6 I think I am ready for Chap. 7 so grab your books and lets do this!
~~~~~~~ 20-ish minutes later ~~~~~~
Yeah boy! The first few paragraphs are fanservice for all the Kull X Adley shippers! However, shame on you Kull! Don't use our precious Adley for a free ride. That is a huge mood killer.
We are finally introduced to the unique traits that make the monks special!! As a long time World of Warcraft player and gamer in general I was refusing to believe that the Monks, Priests etc. were normal people. They have some kind of funky Aleph blessing going on.
I feel like Kull is going to have to kill that conscience of his if he is going to survive in this book. He is going to be faced with some struggles that are far worse than lying to Adley and he wont have the time to doubt himself when that happens.
Ouch, that was sort of harsh. I will say something good next to make up for my meanness.
Any gamer will get that reference :) |
Wael.
Yeah, I have been thinking about how to pronounce that for a good 10 minutes and the best I can come up with is "Wah-ell". That probably isn't right but I feel like it fits a Monk so for now that is what I am going to call him.
This guy is intimidating. He feels like the sturdy pillar that will be the strength of the team, the reliable corner stone. However, with great first impressions comes lingering secrets. Something isn't right with our stoic friend.
We finally got introduced to an animal as well!!! Wael has a pet(?) dog/beast thing! I was so happy when I read this because an animal can provide so many elements to a story that humans can't. They offer silent understanding where you can let the characters rant to them without ever having to make it a conversation, which for an author that's amazing because it is so hard to convey every aspect of your character. Also, on the flip side of things, killing an animal off is a great way to help a character grow without killing off a key character. I really hope that doesn't happen because that always makes me sad but I can understand it if its for the greater good of the book!
So there were no "Morels" in this chapter, in fact the environment is completely different since we are in Lotte and not The Grogan Lands. Vale, The town we are currently in, is completely different than where Kull grew up. Sending Kull to Vale was like sending a homeschooler to college. It had to happen but I don't think he was ready for it. Anyone who lives in the country or in a smaller town totally understands what Kull is going through when he gets to the city. There is a completely different "aura" surrounding the people and you instantly get the feeling that you are unwanted which causes you to react with anger. I have never actually seen this real life element in a book before. The closest thing is when Katniss from "The Hunger Games" gets to The Capitol so I am glad that this is hopefully going to become more frequent in literature.
I only have one more thing that really stood out for me in this chapter but it doesn't necessarily have to do with this specific chapter. The primary motive so far is to "Save Grift" but he seems completely capable of taking care of himself. From a family members perspective I can understand the "save them or die trying" attitude but when it comes to Ewing, he knows and has expressed that Grift is a dangerous man. This reads as a sub-plot or a distraction from the main plot. Something deeper is coming....
I'm hooked and I am excited about doing tomorrows chapter! If you are reading along with me then you should be feeling the same way. If you aren't then you are a robot ^_^
